Abstract: With variability looming large, microelectronics industry is now facing one of the most important and difficult challenges of nanometer scale integrated circuits. This tutorial will discuss variability in VLSI circuits taking a holistic approach in addressing various aspects: from the detailed nature of variability to how to build variation tolerant designs. This tutorial will take a comprehensive look at the anatomy of variability in 65nm technologies and below. We will present an overview of the state of the art in variation-tolerant designs both at architecture and circuits level, while highlighting important unsolved research problems for the future. We will also discuss techniques for dealing with systematic and random sources of variability with a focus on CAD, and the impact of regularity on design manufacturability. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of variability in SRAM designs will also be presented.
